Harry Dresden is the only practicing wizard in the city of Chicago. He's actually in the Yellow Pages, which results in a lot of people coming by just to see if he's for real. Others come to him when they need help and they have exhausted all other resources. Much of his income comes from the Chicago police department, which employs him as a consultant when they encounter cases that are beyond their ability to explain.
The magic system that the author Jim Butcher has created is complex and mixed with just enough actual physics to help you suspend your disbelief well. The dialogue rolls out cleanly, and the characters are well-developed. It reads like a cross between Harry Potter and Mike Hammer, and I love it.
