Months ago, I agreed to teach some classes at a conference being held in Albuquerque for 9-1-1 professionals. Weeks ago, I auditioned for a role in a play opening on April 11th, without knowing exactly when the rehearsals would be. Now, I'm double booked. This evening I leave for Albuquerque (a 180 mile trip), and I'll spend the night there, and attend the first day of the 3-day conference. Then, tomorrow afternoon, I get to drive back to Farmington for rehearsal, and spend the night here, before leaving early in the morning for Albuquerque Tuesday morning. Drive back Tuesday afternoon, then drive to Albuquerque Wednesday morning, to drive back to Farmington Wednesday afternoon.

All told, I will be driving 1,080 miles over the next three days. I should just drive to California, instead. Thank God for audio books.

So, a couple of weeks ago, the hard drive on my four-year-old computer died. I had been wanting to buy a new computer, anyway, and though I usually buy my computers online from Dell, I thought I would just go to the stores and see what was out there.

And there it was, a Dell Inspiron 531 at Sam's Club with a 24" monitor, for less than I had spent on my last computer, though it was (of course) faster, had an awesome monitor, and had everything else I wanted... or at least I thought.

One of the reasons I wanted a new computer was that I wanted to play newer games. Even games that don't take a whole lot in the way of memory and speed were too much for my old computer, and I like playing the occasional roleplaying game with cool graphics. So, the first thing I did after setting up the new computer was I went out and bought Neverwinter Nights 2.

But while installing the game, the installation wizard said, "Your video card has less than 128 Megs of memory, which may affect performance." Sure enough, the graphics skip so bad, I couldn't play it. I checked. My brand new computer had a video card with only 64 Megs of memory.

So, I ordered a new video card, this time with 512 Megs of memory, twice as much as is recommended for the game. Last night I installed it, and turned the computer back on to hear an awful, high-pitched solid tone emanate from the inside the case, although the computer started up fine. I knew that sound; I had a friend whose power supply went bad once, and it made the same sound.

I powered down, opened the computer, looked at my power supply, then looked at the specs for my new video card. The video card requires a power supply capable of delivering 400 watts. Mine delivers 300. My new power supply, the one I just ordered, will be here next Friday.

Gosh, I'm so glad I bought a computer off the shelf at a discount store! Look at all the money I saved!

I don't know that I've ever had an Italian Chardonnay. Now I have. That's about all I can say. I'm not particularly fond of chardonnay, anymore - it all tastes the same to me, and this didn't stick out. Still, it was very drinkable, and that's good considering it came in a 1.5 L bottle.

I'm behind in blogging my wine tasting, so you can expect more over the next couple of days. In other news, I injured myself at rehearsal tonight. There's a scene in the play where I'm supposed to be edging my way across a ledge outside the apartment window, then fall off backwards. While I was wheeling my arms around to keep from falling off, I hit a pole behind the set in the scene shop, and now I have a large, painful knot on my arm.

Also, I'm feeling a little self-conscious. There are two actresses in this play that I'm supposed to kiss at various points. Both of them have seemed really unwilling to do so, and have had to "psych" themselves up to it. To me, it's just part of the role - it's what the script calls for. The fact that they approach the task like they're getting ready to clean a litterbox seems insulting to me. Oh, well.

Happy Easter! This is the day that Jesus came out of his tomb on the third day, saw his shadow, and went back in, signifying that he would be able to drive all the snakes out of Ireland for at least six more weeks. I think. Well, anyway, Happy Easter.

Strix and I went to see The Bank Job the other night, which is based on a true story of a still-unsolved bank robbery in the early 70's in London.

This movie made 1970's London look a bit like Soddom and Gommorah. Someone who was actually there would have to say how accurate this was, but everyone in this movie is dirty in some way, with the robbers actually looking like innocents caught up by circumstance. Lots of plot twists and political intrigue keep this movie very interesting, and there are excellent performances by John Statham, as the leader of the gang, and David Suchet, who plays an unlikely strip-club owning, porn-movie producing criminal mixed up with dirty cops.

The robbers are brought into a plot to rob a bank by drilling up into it from underneath, where they will then have access to the safety deposit boxes. Little do they know they're being set up to retrieve and item that the government needs, and needs to get without any chance of being traced back to the robbery. Unfortunately for the robbers and the government, there are many other things that people have in their safe deposit boxes that they don't want to see the light of day.

My family on my mother's mother's side is Amish. You know, electricity-shunning, indoor-plumbing ignorning, deoderant-discarding Amish. As you may have noticed, I am not Amish. For one thing, I have electricity. Electricity is necessary to run computers, and I run one. Running a computer is necessary for accessing the Internet, and I have access to the Internet, which in turn gives me access to Vox, which allows me to blog. Therefore, I'm a pretty poor Amish guy. Plus, since I'm part Cherokee on my father's side, I can't grow a beard, which makes me a really poor Amish guy.

But Amish by heritage, I am. When my Mom came and visited last fall, she brought me a copy of the Keim family geneology. It was put together by a relative of mine still in the Amish community.

My last name is Branson, which is my adoptive father's last name. My mother's maiden name is Weimer. My grandmother's maiden name is Keim.

And so begins a reading of the Keim family of my history.

"Keim" means kernal or sprout in German. It goes back to 1020 AD, and the first of the Keims was Gottschalk Keim, who dwelled in a castle vested to him by King Conrad II, of the Holy Roman Empire, which was, incidentally, neither Holy nor Roman. He owned a castle named Gerolsek, which apparently is too obscure even for Wikipedia.

So that's it. I am descended from royalty. Or at least, descended from the class of people that was favored by royalty. It's fascinating, and I will be posting more on my family tree later.

My computer died today, as in the hard drive crashed. I concealed my happy dance as best I could, because I've been wanting to buy a new computer anyway. We went to Sam's Club and found one I liked for less than I had intended to spend, with a 24" monitor.

So, I get it all set up with no problem, hook my external hard drive up to it, and go about trying to restore the files I had backed up from my old computer. But wait, will Windows Vista open .bkf backup files from earlier versions of Windows? Surely, it will! To make an operating system that's not reverse compatable with backup files from the last version would just be... evil, and of course, Microsoft's not evil, is it?

You guessed it, Windows Vista won't open .bkf files from the backup utility that was in my Windows XP machine. After a good deal of searching, I found that I could download a Vista version from microsoft, but I also had to make some other adjustments to the operting system's settings. No problem. I download it. It's not for the right type of processor. I go back and download the correct version.

It runs! It's able to access the backup file off of my portable hard drive! I start to extract the files! The program crashes.

I start it up again, and begin extracting the files. The program crashes.

I try it a third time, again, with no success.

Anyone have any ideas?

For lunch today, Strix and I ate at Riverside Pizza. We had both heard that it was good, so we decided to try it out. We had the Greek-style pizza, which had pepperoni, gyro meat, feta cheese, olives, onions, and mozzerella. It was very tasty, and I'm sure we'll go back there again today.

After pizza, we went geocaching for the afternoon, and found every cache went looking for, so overall it was a good day.

For anyone who grew up reading a lot of science fiction, like myself, the weaponization of space probably seemed pretty inevitable. I mean, all those cool stories couldn't happen unless there were really big spaceships flying around all over the place with plasma beams and graviton pulse weapons and... sorry, my geekdom was showing.

But lately we're talking about the real deal, and not only does the weaponization of space mean a threat to the human race like we've never before faced (and we've faced some biggies), it also seems to say something about us as a species. No matter how advanced we become, no matter how much we know, no matter how much mastery we achieve over our physical world, we're still a bunch of apes trying to intimidate the other apes by carrying our big sticks and screaming at each other to seem fierce.

Story #1: Recently, the world was told that a "bus-sized" spy satellite was about to drop out of orbit and crash somewhere on Earth, possibly releasing a half ton of toxic fuel and poisoning anyone who might be in the area of the crash site (if they weren't already dead, that is). To save us all from this grizzly fate, a Navy cruiser fired a missile at the satellite, blowing it to smitherines in orbit.

The question that some people seem to be asking is, was it really necessary to shoot this thing down by firing a missile at it, or was it really done to show the world that we had the technology to shoot down spy satellites with missiles? China has done this before to one of their satellites, so perhaps this was necessary to show that the U.S., too, has the power to shoot down satellites?

I'm not sure I buy it. I think it probably was necessary to shoot it down. At two and a half tons, the satellite in question was too big to count on it burning up in the atmosphere, and if it would have been impossible to predict exactly where it would land. With toxic fuel still on board, destroying the satellite in space would be the only real option, so I think this was the thing to do.

But, the really concerning thing about this issue is something that no one seems to be bringing up. How did we end up with a bus-sized "spy satellite" full of toxic fuel about to rain down on our heads in the first place? Are we so desparate to see what our neighbors are doing that we're willing to threaten the lives of random people on Earth to do it? And if all it was was a spy satellite, why was it so damned big, and filled with toxic fuel? The purpose of the satellite is what I'm not quite believing. You don't need a five ton satellite with on-board fuel to take pictures of the Earth. And even if it was necessary, is it too much to ask that they make the satellite with a self-destruct so we don't have to rely on the military being able to hit it with a missile in a scheme that would make Wile E. Coyote proud?

And so do we trust our government enough to allow them to hang a bus over our head, looking down on us, when they won't tell us everything that's on board, and the stuff they will tell us about would kill us? How did we get to this point?

Story #2: There is a handgun on the International Space Station. It's in the survival kit in the Russian space capsule that is attached to the station and, essentially, part of the station.

I understand the purpose of the gun. If any of the crew had to use the space capsule to escape the space station in the event of a catastrophic failure, there's no guarantee where they will land. Assuming they survive the landing, they may find themselves in the middle of a war zone. Or New Jersey. In which case, they will want to have the handgun.

But, given that there was just recently a story about an astronaut that drove across the country to confront her love rival and was suspected of wanting to kidnap her, are we so sure about the mental health of our astronauts that we're willing to put them all in tight quarters, make them sick to their stomaches from being in microgravity, force them to work 18-hour days, separate them from their friends and family, make them eat toothpaste for every meal, then tell them where the gun is kept? I'm just a simple Earthling, but that doesn't seem like such a hot idea.

It seems, though, that we can't help it. We like guns, and we like blowing things up. That proclivity probably won't go away, no matter how high above the Earth we go.
