Saturday night, Strix and I went to a Mensa meeting at the Marriott Pyramid in Albuquerque, where she was recognized for having won a national Mensa scholarship. Her winning essay beat out over 3,000 other entries! She got $1,000 and a free dinner.
I had to pay for mine.
They frequently get a speaker to come to their dinner meetings, and tonight the speaker was one of the original Tuskegee Airmen. If you don't know about the Tuskegee Airmen, follow the link; it's fascinating. He told us all about how he ended up in this famous air group in the Army Air Corps, and talked proudly of all of the missions they flew during WWII.
Last night we went to Astro Friday, which is a monthly planetarium night at the college. It's a very small planetarium, but it's fun and the shows are usually interesting. They show a movie having to do with science or astronomy, then they turn on the planetarium and show what the sky is going to look like that night, including how to identify the planets and constellations.
Tonight, we went to the monthly poetry slam at Andrea Kristina's, and this time Strix and I both read. There were only four poets, and each poet was scored by five judges, Olympics-style, where each held up a number from one to ten. The top and bottom numbers from each judging were dropped, and the three middle numbers were added together for the poet's score for that round.
I came in dead last. I am a bad poet. Apparently, I am the Vogon of New Mexico.
Strix came in third. Only the top two go on to the next round, so we're out. We plan on getting in early next season, and I have to redeem myself by showing that I am not dead last material. We'll see.
